Shared Earth

Learning to grow food, care for plants and live in harmony with the natural world has always been important to us. Before making the move to where we are now, between us, we have enjoyed growing food in a tiny, mid-terrace yard with minimal sunlight, uncovering an unwanted forest garden allotment plot which hadn't been cared for in five years (think Lost Gardens of Heligan!), and finally sharing a large garden which we were really starting to put our mark on when life had other plans...

When our journey brought us to where we are now, it became apparent just how lucky we are to have the opportunity of working so closely with the land. We see ourselves very much as stewards of this beautiful patch, holding space for it and its needs, while feeling honoured to call it home.

Our volunteer days

Our smallholding really is our little oasis and we pride ourselves on working with nature by using organic, no dig and permaculture methods. However, there is always so much to do we often struggle to keep up. During the last couple of years we’ve had friends visit and often they will say how they’d love to come and help on the land. In response to that and our digital detox focus our Shared Earth Days were born.

  • Do you love being in nature?

  • Do you enjoy gardening?

  • Would you like to spend time volunteering in an environment free from the distractions of wireless devices?

We hold a Shared Earth Day one Saturday a month. They are structured yet informal days with volunteers doing only what is within their capabilities. Each month is different based on the projects we have going and also what's required for the land at that time of year.

In exchange for our volunteers time and energy, food and refreshments are provided and the work day gives way to a social time in the evening and an opportunity to gather together around a campfire.

If this sounds like something you'd enjoy, please contact us for dates and times.

I have now volunteered here four times and on each occasion I have enjoyed myself and my efforts have been appreciated. I too was pleased with what I had achieved each time having used my energies in easy productive activities in support of our host’s vision. In return, during bad weather we have all retreated to the polytunnel to undertake ‘indoor’ activities like seed planting, raised bed gardening and so on, sharing time and enterprise with like-minded people. Chatting over morning coffee and shared lunch has been a bonus and at the end of each day I have retired satisfied and pleasantly exhausted having done something that will make a small difference and endure perhaps for years to come.
